Differential privacy (DP) is a mathematical framework for analyzing data while protecting the privacy of individuals in a dataset. It is used in mobile marketing to protect the privacy of individuals while still allowing for valuable insights to be gathered from their data. DP can be especially important when working with large amounts of personal data collected from mobile devices, such as location, browsing history, and app usage data. By applying differential privacy methods to this data, mobile marketers can gain useful insights into consumer behavior and preferences while still ensuring that individual privacy is protected. For example, the technique can mask sensitive information, such as specific location data, or aggregate data in a way that ensures individual anonymity.

What is the mechanism behind differential privacy?

The mechanism behind differential privacy is based on the concept of adding "noise" to a dataset in order to mask sensitive information and preserve the privacy of individual users. By adding noise to the data, such as random values or small perturbations, differential privacy makes it difficult for an attacker to identify any specific individual. This noise is carefully calibrated to preserve the utility of the dataset while still protecting individual privacy. There are several different ways to add noise to a dataset, but the most common methods include the following:

  1. Laplacian noise: This method adds a random value drawn from a Laplacian distribution to each value in the dataset. The amount of noise added is determined by a privacy parameter called epsilon (ε). The smaller the value of ε, the more noise is added and the greater the privacy protection.
  2. Gaussian noise: Similar to Laplacian noise, this method adds a random value drawn from a Gaussian distribution to each value in the dataset. The amount of noise added is determined by a privacy parameter called sigma (σ).
  3. Perturbation: The perturbation method involves slightly altering the values in the dataset, such as rounding or clustering values together. The amount of perturbation is determined by a privacy parameter epsilon (ε).
  4. Randomized response: This method is a survey technique that can protect the privacy of the individuals who are being surveyed. This method randomly chooses between providing the true answer or a randomized answer, and by doing so, it is hard for the survey taker to know if the answer provided is true or not.
